Knowing His Voice,
“Do you know how to tell the difference between the whispers of a stranger vs. a friend?” One of my friends asked me this the other day. On the surface it seemed rather obvious, since I most likely wouldn’t be talking to a stranger in the first place. But the truth is, some of us often allow strangers to come closer in proximity than that of a friend, simply because at times we can’t tell the difference.
So, how does one tell the difference between that of a stranger, and of a friend’s voice? Easy… Does it line up with the word, or does it follow the path that leads to lies? Let’s say you’re a married woman, and someone tells you to leave your husband, because the Lord has a better one for you; we know that’s not of God, because He would never tell you to leave your husband to be with another man. Therefore, that voice (or whisper) was indeed a lie, and should be rejected.
Well, this same thing applies in our Christian walk, the problem is if you don’t know the voice of a friend you’ll be prone to following that of a stranger. In John 10:5 the Greek word for “stranger” is allotrios, and it means: belonging to another, foreign or strange.
So, in a sense this is saying a strangers voice, whisper, call, etc. should sound foreign to us, and even strange, because it doesn’t line up with the Word, which means we shouldn’t line up with it!
“A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.”
John 10:5, ESV
As you go on doing your regular day-to-day, be mindful to following the True Shepherd’s voice, for there are many whispers that come, and even more that are to come, but only His voice should you follow.
